The UMMB familty is proud to congratulate Associate Director Emeritus Thom Hannum on his induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors in the percussion world.
For generations of bandos, the recognition comes as no surprise.
Hannum arrived at UMass Amherst in 1979 as a graduate student and quickly began building what would become one of the most respected collegiate drumlines in the country. Under his leadership, the UMass Drumline earned a national reputation for excellence, innovation, and musicality, influencing countless percussion programs across the nation.
His impact on the university extended far beyond the drumline. Hannum founded the UMass Hoop Band, led the Marimba Bands and Marimba Ensembles, and helped shape the musical experiences of thousands of students throughout his four decades at UMass.
While his contributions to percussion education are widely recognized, many alumni remember another defining chapter in his career. Following the passing of Professor George N. Parks in 2010, Hannum stepped forward to help guide the Minuteman Marching Band through one of the most difficult periods in its history. His steady leadership, compassion, and commitment to the organization helped ensure that the traditions and values of the UMMB would continue for future generations.
Throughout his career, Hannum served as a mentor to countless students, educators, and performers. Among them is current Associate Director Ian Hale, one of many UMMB alumni who carry forward lessons learned from his teaching and leadership.
A member of the UMMB Hall of Fame since 1996, Hannum retired from UMass in 2020. His influence, however, continues to be felt throughout the marching arts, percussion community, and the Minuteman Band family.
We congratulate Professor Hannum on this latest—and well-deserved—recognition of an extraordinary career and lasting legacy.
