The University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band has long been a proving ground for future leaders in music education. In 2024, one of its alumni joined an elite group of educators recognized for their impact on the profession.
At the Massachusetts Music Educators Association All-State Conference, Professor Daniel Albert ’01 received the Lowell Mason Award, one of the organization’s highest honors. The award recognizes outstanding leadership, professional achievement, and significant contributions to music education across the Commonwealth.
For Albert, the recognition represents a journey that began on the UMass Amherst campus. As a student, he performed in the Minuteman Marching Band front ensemble, where he studied percussion with legendary educator Thom Hannum. The experience helped shape both his musicianship and his understanding of teaching, leadership, and service.
After graduating from UMass, Albert built a distinguished career as a music educator, researcher, and advocate. Before joining the faculty at UMass Amherst, he taught in Massachusetts public schools and later at Augsburg University. Today, he serves as a professor of music education at UMass, helping prepare future generations of music teachers while contributing to the field through scholarship, presentations, and professional service.
The award also highlights a meaningful connection across generations. Hannum, one of the most influential figures in the history of the Minuteman Marching Band and a mentor to countless students, received the Lowell Mason Award in 2018. Six years later, one of his former students earned the same distinction.
For members of the UMass Band community, Albert’s achievement serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of the program and the educators who have guided it. From the front ensemble to the university classroom, Albert’s career reflects the values that have long defined the Minuteman Marching Band: excellence, leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to helping others grow.
Congratulations to Dan Albert on this well-deserved recognition and on continuing a tradition of educational leadership that stretches from one generation of Minutemen to the next.
